The Proxemics
Founded in early 2009, The Proxemics are an autonomous music project with a revolving cast of musicians led by lynch pin and frontman Alex Neville (The brilliant Dullards, A. Barnhouse, Audible Whispering 1/2 Quartet). They are currently working as a quartet featuring Neville (Guitar, Mandolin, Bass, Samples, Vocals), Yozo Suzuki (Guitar), Peter (Bass) and Lucas Carr (Drums) and reside on the High Mayhem label.
The Proxemics are a stripped down assembly, sometimes appearing as a garage-based, dirty wall of sound, sometimes as deconstructed balladeers offering you their hearts on their sleeves. Neville unites crunchy, angular alt-rock with a singer-songwriter sensibility while never letting go of his experimental roots. Mimicking the definition of their moniker, The Proxemics are at times both distant and intimate, treating their audience to an emotional tug-of-war. The songs appear effortless on the surface, but upon deeper investigation they become a complex system of asymmetrical forms with sonic threads and noise, weaving songs into a larger, continuous theme.
The shifting members of The Proxemics are all long-time members of the High Mayhem Emerging Arts Collective, also based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, which has helped shape the City Different’s unique underground scene for the last ten years.
Vega Evaga
We are psychedelic electro-pop symphonies from outer space.
We Drew Lightning
Michael Smith and Roland Ostheim have been creating music for almost nine years starting with the band Derail. After some changes in lineup, the band pursued its lush sound and started recording “Swimming With Orange” in 2006-07 on High Mayhem Records. Throughout the recording session there was a need to change identities to progress into a new existence. During one of the recordings sessions the studio was struck with lightning during a take on one of the bands integral songs , and We Drew Lightning was born.
We Drew Lightning is propelled by Michael Smith’s bombastic drumming and Roland Ostheim’s textured guitar work. The band is a culmination of song structures and sonic improvisations in the vein of such influences as Sonic Youth, the Melvins, Pixies, Bardo Pond, Blah Blah… too much to name!
Loud, Sensual, Engaging are all words that could describe their sound. We Drew Lightning are a duo of Ruthless Sweethearts that attack with a wall of sound, but bring you back down to earth only to propel you again to another planet.
